Project description:

Organisations of all types and sizes are required to manage the risks of non-compliance caused by their activities in order to meet applicable obligations (compliance). Many recent examples, such as the VW affairs, irregularities at Deutsche Bank or MAN, or difficulties at ADAC, FIFA and other organisations, have shown that effective compliance solutions are absolutely essential. These solutions are usually realised by implementing a compliance management system (CMS). This involves methods and procedures that are characterised by various scientific disciplines, such as business administration, law or communication science. Two limitations play a special role in the development of compliance, which were also the subject of the project. On the one hand, the impact of compliance on the shifting boundaries between the state and the economy has not yet been researched. Secondly, the practical question of how CMS can be introduced in globally active organisations while taking social and cultural differences into account has not yet been investigated.

During the three-year project period, several dissertation projects were carried out and several national and international specialist conferences were organised with the participation of dozens of experts and organisations from all over the world. Close cooperative relationships were established with Polish institutions and a strategic partner in Thailand. In the course of the project, the national and international visibility of the topic was significantly increased and further renowned project partners were acquired: These include international organisations such as the OECD, UN and ASEAN, as well as the stock exchange in Poland, which have made significant contributions to the project through their representatives. The project partners and researchers worked together in an interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary manner to obtain the results.

The project has essentially revealed the following with regard to border issues: With regard to the border between the state and the economy, compliance has made a significant contribution. When globally active organisations cross state borders, compliance solutions are possible that allow uniform standards to be implemented in globally active organisations while taking into account social and cultural differences in other countries. Federal Minister of Justice Heiko Maas, who has taken over the patronage of one part of the project, has described it as a "driving force for compliance practice" that has been "constantly fuelling the debate for three years now". The topic clearly strengthens the profile focus of the university and the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION and is recognisable both nationally and internationally, not least due to its successful digitalisation concept (www.compliance-academia.org). The connectable research results are not only characterised by high practical relevance, but will certainly serve as a basis for further research projects.
