Exiled Intellectuals: Encounters, Conflicts, and Experiences in Transnational Context
ed. by Latife Akyüz, Hakan Altun, Eylem Çamuroğlu Çığ, Melehat Kutun
This book explores the contemporary crisis of democracy, shaped by authoritarianism, neoliberal authoritarianism, right-wing populism, and democratic backsliding. In Turkey, authoritarianism surged after the Gezi resistance, targeting intellectuals, restricting opportunities, and criminalizing dissent—leading to a "new exile." This forced migration, driven by persecution and neoliberal inequalities, blends economic, political, and intellectual dimensions. Edited by four peace academics who are part of this "new exile," the book documents this era through the exiled intellectuals’ own narratives, highlighting their resistance and knowledge production in transnational spaces.
