Project "Borders and Bordering since 2015" extended by 12 months
The Gerda Henkel Foundation has approved the extension of the project "Borders and Bordering since 2015: Refugees, Civil Society and Transnational Mobility from Turkey to Germany" by 12 months until March 2025.
The project is led by Dr Burcu Toğral Koca at the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION.
.
The project analyses the extent to which civil society actors have intervened against, challenged and changed borders at various levels since the refugee movements of 2015. Using the approach of critical migration and border studies, borders and border demarcations are understood as spaces, processes and institutions. Taking into account the multiple spaces and selectivity of borders, the research focuses on actions of civil society actors against deportation mechanisms that hinder the mobility of refugees within and across territorial spaces, with a particular focus on Afghan refugees in Istanbul and Berlin. The project aims to raise broader normative and political questions, both in relation to new forms of inequality and exclusion, and to new forms of political activism and solidarity in the face of growing geopolitical turbulence and instability.
