M. Klessmann Spokeswoman of the KWG section "Kulturwiss. Border Studies"
Maria Klessmann (Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION) and Ulla Connor (Saarland University) were elected as spokespersons for the section "Cultural Border Studies" in the Kulturwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft e.V. (KWG) in April 2023.
Cultural border studies are interested in political-territorial, socio-cultural and symbolic-aesthetic border demarcation processes. They take up the position of classical border studies, whose primary subject matter is territorial borders and their cultural, social, political, economic or legal implications. Border studies in cultural studies broaden this perspective by also focussing on border demarcations as processes of order in other areas of society: for example, gender concepts, language borders, urban/rural borders, formats of aesthetic border demarcations and much more. The Cultural Border Studies section aims to make a contribution to the empirical foundation and conceptualisation of border research, as well as to their interconnection.
